The Metro Detroit Arab-American community is mourning the tragic loss of Qasim Abbas Al-Khafaji, also known as Kassem Alkhafaji, a 23-year-old Dearborn resident who died in a workplace accident on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, after a trench collapsed at a commercial construction site in Handy Township, Michigan.
According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Nicholson Road. Qasim was working in an excavation while crews installed underground storage tanks when the trench suddenly collapsed, trapping him beneath a large amount of soil.
Fellow workers immediately began digging in an effort to reach him before emergency responders arrived. Deputies, firefighters, and rescue personnel joined the rescue operation and eventually extricated Qasim from the collapsed trench. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal workplace accident.
MIOSHA Investigation Underway
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has launched an investigation into the incident, working alongside local authorities to determine what caused the trench collapse.
Investigators are expected to examine whether all required excavation safety measures were in place, including protective trench systems, trench boxes, soil stabilization methods, employee training, and compliance with state workplace safety regulations. As is standard in fatal workplace incidents, the investigation may take several months before findings are released.
No conclusions regarding the cause of the collapse or any potential safety violations have been announced.
