The Theresa, Wisconsin, community is mourning the loss of Joel Bernhard, the founder of Confections For Any Occasion, who passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the age of 47. Bernhard died at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy defined by resilience, unwavering faith, generosity, and exceptional craftsmanship.
Known throughout Wisconsin for his award-winning chocolates and welcoming personality, Joel Bernhard built far more than a successful confectionery business. Through his kindness, perseverance, and dedication to serving others, he became a cherished member of the Theresa community. Following news of his passing, customers, friends, local organizations, and community members shared heartfelt tributes celebrating the remarkable impact he made both personally and professionally.
Born on November 8, 1978, to Ron and Karen (Zedler) Bernhard, Joel faced extraordinary challenges from an early age. At just two years old, he developed a brain tumor and underwent multiple surgeries that ultimately resulted in the loss of his eyesight. Rather than allowing those challenges to define him, Joel embraced life with remarkable optimism, often inspiring others with his personal motto: “It’s not what you can’t do, it’s what you can do.”
He attended Franklin Elementary School in Oshkosh, where he learned Braille and mobility skills before graduating from Lomira High School. During his school years, he participated in band, 4-H, forensics, FFA, and the Fond du Lac County Fair, demonstrating his determination to remain active and engaged.
A lifelong member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, Joel’s Christian faith remained central to every aspect of his life. After earning a Culinary Arts degree from Moraine Park Technical College, he turned his passion for baking and chocolate-making into a lifelong career. In 2001, he founded Confections For Any Occasion, which quickly became a beloved destination known for handcrafted chocolates and outstanding customer service.
Even after a devastating fire temporarily closed the business in 2024, Joel remained determined to rebuild. Supported by his staff and the Theresa community, he continued pursuing his dream with the same resilience that had characterized his entire life.
Throughout the years, Joel also endured numerous health challenges, including multiple surgeries and both liver and kidney transplants. Despite these hardships, he remained actively involved in operating his business, frequently providing guidance and encouragement to his staff even while hospitalized. His perseverance, courage, and unwavering optimism earned the admiration of customers, healthcare professionals, friends, and family alike.
Joel is survived by his mother, Karen Bernhard; his brother, Mike (Tammy) Bernhard; nieces Samantha (Aidric) Mertens and Sabrina Bernhard (fiancé Brandon Evans); along with many extended family members, friends, loyal customers, and a community that deeply valued his friendship and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Bernhard; his sister, Angela Bernhard; his maternal grandparents, Lester and Bette Zedler; his paternal grandparents, Carl and Gladys Bernhard; and his uncle, Ron Schwenk.
A Christian Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Theresa.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Theresa Fire Department, or the Theresa Historical Society.
Joel Bernhard will be remembered not only for the exceptional confections he created but also for his remarkable courage, steadfast faith, generous heart, and unwavering belief that life’s challenges should never define a person’s potential. His legacy lives on through the business he founded, the community he inspired, and the countless lives he brightened with kindness, encouragement, and hope.
Heartfelt condolences are extended to Joel Bernhard’s family, friends, employees, customers, and the entire Theresa community during this time of mourning. May his memory be a lasting blessing, and may he rest in eternal peace.
