CAMDEN COUNTY, Missouri — Family, friends, and the Laquey community are mourning the tragic loss of Laura McLinn-West, 48, who died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash in Camden County after the motorcycle she was riding on attempted to avoid a deer that entered the roadway.
According to a preliminary report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the crash occurred Sunday evening on Route A, approximately 1,003 feet east of Rainwater Drive, east of Camdenton.
Investigators said a 2010 Harley-Davidson Ultra Glide was traveling eastbound when a deer suddenly entered the roadway. In an effort to avoid striking the animal, the motorcycle’s operator, Dave West, lost control, causing the motorcycle to crash. Both Dave West and passenger Laura McLinn-West were ejected during the collision.
Laura sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries Monday morning.
Dave West suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released an updated condition on his recovery.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. At this time, troopers have not identified any contributing factors beyond the deer entering the roadway, and the investigation remains active.

Those who knew her will cherish the memories they created together and the lasting impact she made through her relationships and caring spirit.

Officials noted that Laura McLinn-West’s death marks Troop F’s 35th traffic fatality of 2026, underscoring the ongoing dangers motorists face on rural roadways where wildlife crossings can occur unexpectedly.
Authorities continue to encourage drivers, particularly motorcyclists, to remain vigilant while traveling through wooded and rural areas, especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours when deer activity is at its highest.
Funeral and memorial service arrangements have not yet been publicly announced. Additional information may be shared by the family as it becomes available.
