Whether serving his country in the United States Navy, designing landscapes as a registered landscape architect, performing music at local venues, or traveling with loved ones, Dan embraced every chapter of life with enthusiasm and curiosity. His ability to connect with others and his willingness to embrace new experiences made him someone who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
A Strong Foundation in Ohio
Danny Lee Shepherd was born on September 18, 1949, in Mansfield, Ohio, to John Shepherd and Dorothy Harmon Shepherd. Raised in a close-knit family, he developed values of perseverance, kindness, and responsibility that shaped his life.
He graduated from Mansfield Madison High School in 1968, beginning a journey that would take him far beyond his hometown. Friends from his early years remember his adventurous spirit, curiosity, and eagerness to explore new opportunities.
Service in the United States Navy
Following high school, Dan joined the United States Navy, where he served aboard the USS Hank and achieved the rank of Quartermaster.
His military service instilled discipline, leadership, and a strong sense of purpose. Family members often spoke with pride about his service, noting that although he rarely sought recognition, his time in the Navy remained one of the most meaningful chapters of his life.
A Career in Landscape Architecture
After completing his military service, Dan pursued higher education at The Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.
He went on to build a successful career as a registered landscape architect, working with engineering firms in Columbus, Ohio. His creativity and technical skill contributed to projects that shaped public and private spaces throughout the region.
Colleagues remember him as professional, thoughtful, and optimistic—someone who believed good design could improve everyday life and community well-being.
A Life of Adventure
Dan embraced life with a spirit of adventure.
He completed more than 200 skydiving jumps, finding excitement and freedom in every leap. He also enjoyed snow skiing and shared many trips with family and friends, creating memories on the slopes and beyond.
As a member of the Sandusky Sailing Club, he spent time sailing Ohio’s lakes, enjoying both challenge and peace on the water.
His willingness to try new experiences inspired others around him to live more boldly and fully.
Creativity Through Music and Photography
Beyond his professional life and adventures, Dan expressed his creativity through music and photography.
He performed under the name “Buck Two Ninety-Eight,” entertaining audiences at local open mic nights with guitar and song. His performances reflected his easygoing personality and desire to bring joy to others.
He also worked as a photographer for The Ohio State University Cheer Squad, capturing meaningful moments with an artistic eye and attention to detail.
Family Was His Greatest Joy
While Dan’s accomplishments were many, his greatest pride was his family.
He shared 51 years of marriage with his wife, Darcie Ewing Shepherd, building a life centered on love, partnership, and shared adventure.
Together they returned in retirement to the Dover and New Philadelphia area, reconnecting with the place where their journey together had begun.
He was a devoted father to daughters Teri Shepherd and Samantha Shepherd, and a proud grandfather to Paige Preston, Kiara Clausen, and Madison Clausen. He also found joy in his role as a great-grandfather to Leo and Isaac Preston.
Family members remember him as a constant source of encouragement, humor, and wisdom.
Remembering a Life Well Lived
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Bill Cress, John and Inez Shepherd, and his brother, Mike Shepherd.
Although his passing leaves a deep sense of loss, his legacy lives on through the memories he created and the lives he touched.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 27, at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the memorial service at noon, officiated by Steve Jenkins.
