The Marion, North Carolina, community is mourning the passing of Bryan Derek “Big Funky” Wilson, who died on June 27, 2026, at the age of 45. His passing has left family members, friends, former teammates, and loved ones grieving the loss of a man remembered for his kindness, unwavering faith, and the positive impact he made throughout his life.

A lifelong resident of Marion, Derek was affectionately known as “Big Funky,” a nickname that reflected his larger-than-life personality, infectious sense of humor, and ability to make everyone around him feel welcome. Those who knew him remember him as a compassionate, generous, and encouraging individual whose genuine care for others left a lasting impression on countless lives.

Derek was a graduate of Erskine College, where he earned his degree in 2003 while proudly representing the college as a member of its baseball team. During his years as a student-athlete, he built lifelong friendships and earned the admiration of teammates and coaches through his dedication, teamwork, and positive attitude. Many continue to remember him not only for his athletic contributions but also for the friendship and encouragement he extended to everyone around him.

While baseball remained an important part of his life, those closest to Derek say his greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kristen Mabus Wilson, and their twin daughters, Brantley Grace Wilson and Brynnley Faith Wilson. He is also survived by his parents, Bryan Wade and Joy Smith Wilson of Marion, North Carolina, and his sister, Alicia Dell Wilson of Wilmington, North Carolina. Family members describe him as a devoted husband, loving father, cherished son, and caring brother whose love for his family was evident in everything he did.

A faithful member of Lake Bowen Baptist Church, Derek lived his life with humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving others. Friends and fellow church members remember him as someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer words of encouragement, and brighten the lives of those around him with his warm smile and uplifting spirit.

As news of his passing spread, heartfelt tributes poured in from across North Carolina, the Erskine College community, and beyond. Family members, friends, former teammates, and community members continue to honor his memory by sharing stories that reflect his loyalty, authenticity, generosity, and unwavering kindness.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2, from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at The Wood Mortuary in Greer, South Carolina. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. in The Wood Mortuary Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Black Tie Boston Rescue or the Erskine College Baseball program in Derek’s memory.
