The Pitt County community is mourning the loss of 41-year-old Anthony Maimone after a tragic domestic violence incident and hours-long law enforcement standoff Tuesday morning near Highway 43 and Chicod School in Pitt County, North Carolina.
According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence around 7:45 a.m. following a report of a domestic violence incident. When authorities arrived, one individual was transported by emergency medical services to ECU Health Medical Center for medical treatment. Officials have not released further details regarding that person’s condition.
Authorities said Anthony Maimone remained inside the residence after deputies arrived. Law enforcement officers attempted multiple times to establish communication with him, but those efforts were unsuccessful. As the situation continued, Highway 43 was temporarily closed, and nearby residents were notified while additional emergency resources responded to the scene.
The response involved multiple agencies and specialized units, including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), tactical teams, and emergency personnel. Officers worked for several hours to safely resolve the situation while continuing efforts to make contact with Maimone.
After the extended standoff, members of the tactical team entered the home and discovered Anthony Maimone deceased. Authorities stated that preliminary information indicates he died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
