Authorities in South Carolina have announced a major development in the ongoing investigation into the June 4 deputy-involved shootout in Richland County, as 21-year-old Tyjae Miller surrendered to law enforcement Thursday morning to face multiple felony charges.
The surrender marks another significant step in an investigation that has already resulted in multiple arrests following a violent exchange of gunfire involving Richland County Sheriff’s deputies in the Summit community. Detectives continue to piece together the circumstances that led to the incident, which authorities say stemmed from an earlier shooting elsewhere in the county.
Suspect Surrenders to Authorities
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD), Tyjae Miller voluntarily turned himself in at sheriff’s headquarters on Thursday morning.
Investigators have charged Miller with:
-
Three counts of attempted murder involving law enforcement officers
-
Possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime
-
Aggravated breach of peace
Following his surrender, Miller was taken into custody and booked as the investigation continues.
Investigators Identify Miller as Alleged Fifth Shooter
Sheriff’s investigators allege that Miller was the fifth individual involved in the June 4 gun battle and was identified as a member of what investigators have referred to as “Team A.”
Authorities have not publicly released additional details explaining the role Miller allegedly played during the confrontation or whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation progresses.
As with all criminal cases, the charges against Miller are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Shootout Followed Earlier Shooting Investigation
The deputy shootout occurred in the Summit neighborhood on June 4 after deputies responded during an investigation connected to an earlier shooting on Sagamore Road.
According to investigators, the earlier violence ultimately led deputies to the Summit area, where multiple individuals allegedly exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers.
Three Richland County deputies became involved in the confrontation. Authorities have previously stated that the deputies returned fire during the incident.
Officials have not indicated that any deputies sustained life-threatening injuries during the exchange.
Earlier Arrest Also Announced
Miller’s surrender comes shortly after investigators announced the arrest of Aric Hicks, who was identified as the first suspect charged in connection with the earlier Sagamore Road shooting that authorities believe set the events of June 4 into motion.
Detectives continue examining whether additional suspects may have participated in either incident as they work to establish a complete timeline.
Investigation Remains Active
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says detectives continue to:
-
Review physical and forensic evidence
-
Analyze surveillance footage
-
Interview witnesses
-
Determine the roles of all individuals involved
-
Identify whether additional arrests are warranted
Authorities have not disclosed whether more suspects remain outstanding.
Officials continue urging anyone with information related to either the Sagamore Road shooting or the Summit neighborhood shootout to contact investigators.

As investigators continue building the case, residents are awaiting additional information regarding the events that led to the confrontation and whether further criminal charges will be filed.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has indicated that updates will be provided as new verified information becomes available and the investigation moves forward.
