Brandi Reynolds Obituary, Death: 35-year-old Postal Service Worker Kidnapped, Murdered on Her Route

A United States Postal Service worker was kidnapped and murdered while on her rural delivery route in North Carolina, according to authorities.

Brandi Reynolds, a rural letter carrier for USPS, was found dead on June 26 in Hays, North Carolina, a small rural community in Wilkes County. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed her death in a statement, while the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at approximately 4:16 p.m. that day. Authorities said Reynolds had been shot, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Officials confirmed that Reynolds was actively on her mail route at the time of the incident. Postal Inspector Jessica Adams stated that she was carrying out her duties when the attack occurred.

Investigators later arrested 56-year-old William Craig Durham in connection with the case. He has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and first-degree murder. Court filings allege that Durham restrained Reynolds and moved her against her will “for the purpose of terrorizing” her.

An attorney representing Durham declined to comment on the charges when contacted on July 1. Authorities have not publicly released a motive, and it remains unclear whether Durham and Reynolds were previously known to one another. Records indicate Durham has prior convictions, including firearms-related offenses and kidnapping.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are jointly leading the ongoing investigation into the case.

Reynolds was 35 years old, according to an online obituary. She is remembered as a devoted mother of two daughters, described as “her whole world.” Her obituary also notes that her husband, Brent Andrew Reynolds, passed away at the age of 35 just months earlier.

The tragedy has prompted widespread grief and concern, particularly among postal workers and rural carriers who face unique risks while serving isolated routes.

Reynolds’ death continues to be investigated as authorities work to establish a full account of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
