WESTWOOD, Massachusetts — Authorities have released additional information following a fatal single-vehicle crash in which an SUV left Route 1, struck a utility pole, and crashed into a motel, causing extensive damage and disrupting traffic along one of the region’s busiest roadways.
The crash occurred Monday afternoon on the southbound side of Providence Highway (Route 1). Emergency crews from the Westwood Police Department, Westwood Fire Department, and utility companies responded after receiving reports of a serious rollover crash involving significant structural damage.
According to investigators, the SUV struck a utility pole with enough force to bring it down before continuing into the front portion of the Budget Inn motel. The collision caused extensive damage to both the vehicle and the building, scattering debris across the roadway and prompting temporary lane closures as emergency crews secured the scene.
First responders found the SUV overturned near the motel and immediately began rescue operations. Firefighters and police secured the area, evacuated affected sections of the motel, and requested building inspectors to assess the structure’s safety following the impact.
Authorities confirmed that the driver, an adult man who was the vehicle’s sole occupant, died from injuries sustained in the crash. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of his next of kin.
Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like an explosion before discovering the heavily damaged SUV near the motel. Several guests said the impact shook the building, while others experienced an immediate power outage after the utility pole was struck.
The collision temporarily disrupted electrical service to the motel and nearby businesses as utility crews worked to replace damaged infrastructure and restore power. Traffic along Route 1 remained heavily affected for several hours while investigators documented the scene, removed the wreckage, and crews completed emergency repairs.
Investigators have not determined what caused the SUV to leave the roadway. Authorities are examining several possible factors, including speed, a potential medical emergency, mechanical failure, roadway conditions, and driver impairment. Officials have emphasized that the cause of the crash remains under investigation and that no conclusions have been reached.
The investigation is being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police in coordination with local authorities. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, physical evidence, and witness statements as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.
Despite the significant damage to the motel, authorities said no guests or employees inside the building suffered fatal injuries. Emergency officials credited the rapid response of first responders with helping secure the scene and prevent additional harm.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have indicated that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
