MODESTO, California — A tragic multi-vehicle crash near Modesto has claimed the life of Jon Burgess, 38, of Manteca, following a devastating collision Saturday night that also left several others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Ladd Road near Tully Road, where investigators say a 2026 Porsche coupe traveling westbound was allegedly speeding when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
According to the CHP, the Porsche first struck the rear of a Ram pickup truck, causing the pickup to leave the roadway and overturn. Despite the initial collision, the Porsche continued traveling westbound before crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with an eastbound Mercedes-Benz SUV.
The violent impact caused the Porsche to come to rest on the roadway, where it caught fire, creating additional challenges for emergency responders.
Authorities said the Porsche’s 57-year-old Modesto driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending official notification procedures.
Jon Burgess, 38, of Manteca, who was riding as a passenger in the Porsche, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. CHP officials later confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
The driver of the Ram pickup, a 27-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. Five passengers traveling in the pickup—a 14-year-old girl, 16-year-old girl, 26-year-old woman, 42-year-old woman, and 2-year-old girl—were either uninjured or sustained only minor injuries.
The occupants of the Mercedes SUV also suffered serious injuries. Authorities identified them as Diana Ybarra, 52, of Oakdale, who was driving, and Manuel Ybarra, 53, of Oakdale, the passenger. Both were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the role speed may have played in the collision. No additional information has been released regarding possible contributing factors as the investigation remains active.
The death of Jon Burgess has left his family, friends, and the Manteca community mourning the loss of a life cut tragically short. As loved ones remember him, they also await answers as investigators work to determine the full sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
Authorities continue to remind motorists that excessive speed and reckless driving can have devastating consequences, urging all drivers to obey traffic laws and remain attentive behind the wheel to help prevent similar tragedies.
Jon Burgess will be remembered by those who knew and loved him, and heartfelt condolences are extended to his family and friends during this difficult time.
