WEBSTER CITY, Iowa — A tragic wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 20 near Webster City claimed the lives of two drivers Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle entered the westbound lanes while traveling in the opposite direction, authorities said.

The devastating head-on collision occurred shortly after noon, prompting a large emergency response and the closure of a major stretch of Highway 20 for several hours as investigators worked to determine exactly what led to the fatal crash.

Wrong-Way Driver Collides Head-On With Oncoming Vehicle

According to the Webster City Police Department, emergency calls began coming in after reports that a vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 20 near Webster City.

Law enforcement officers from the Webster City Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately and attempted to intercept the wrong-way vehicle. However, before officers could reach it, the vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming westbound vehicle approximately one mile west of the Webster City exit.

Authorities said both vehicles sustained catastrophic damage as a result of the violent impact.

Both Drivers Lose Their Lives

Officials confirmed that each vehicle was occupied only by its driver.

One of the drivers was transported by emergency responders to Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City in critical condition. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, the driver later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The second driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of either victim pending notification of their next of kin.

Highway Closed for Hours

The collision forced the closure of the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 20 for several hours while investigators processed the crash scene.

Traffic was diverted at a nearby exit, creating lengthy backups and delays for motorists traveling through the area. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes until the roadway was reopened later in the day.

Hamilton County Sheriff Alex Pruismann said the crash occurred just west of the Webster City exit and noted that the heavy volume of traffic added to the challenges faced by emergency responders working at the scene.
